If Today was Your Last day on Earth!

A collection of wild videos popped up on my computer screen the other day. "Rapture Imminent" they screeched. "Confirmation of Rapture" they yelled into my unsuspecting ears, in loud tones ... like the sound of a trumpet at dead of night. There were so many of them! Dozens of little children have been having Rapture dreams of late – they tell us that they saw people being taken up into heaven. Adults claimed confidently that God had confirmed to them personally, that Sept 23rd 2025 is the date when the Rapture will occur – the day when all of us who are in Christ will be taken to be with Jesus.
My curiosity was piqued, so I clicked on a few of the links. I was surprised! Scripture declares unequivocally that no one, not even Jesus Himself knows when the day of the Lord would be. It will come like a thief in the night, we are told - when we least expect it. "But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father." Matthew 24:36.

It can't get clearer than that, can it? This is what St Paul says: "Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night." 1 Thessalonians 5:1-2 Yes, it's clear. We do not know the date. We do not need to. There's no point even speculating on it. While I am still rather shocked at their daring claims, there was a definite positive on seeing those videos - they helped me realise how complacent I've been! True, I've been really impatient to meet Jesus, face to face, but … I have to admit, that the way I live my life doesn't always express my readiness to see Him!
If today was the last day of my life – would I be ready? If Jesus came today, would He be pleased with me? I've been thinking long and hard – not about the Rapture but about the quality of my life. I do want to please God in all I do! But am I truly living the way He has asked me to?

St Paul reminds us how we should await His return. "But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all children of the light and children of the day. Since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet." 1 Thessalonians 5:4-8 That sounds good to me. Yes, faith, hope and love must always be the hallmarks of our lives!
Here are a few questions to reflect on, as we seek to be alert and ready for that day.
- 1. Am I living a life of
purity, seeking to be blameless and holy as the Word proclaims?
2. If Jesus came today (or if I died and went to be with Him) – would He be pleased with me?
3. Is there anyone I need to forgive?
4. Is there someone who needs my love and care today?
5. Am I making the most of each day?
6. Am I collecting earthly riches or gathering heavenly ones?
7. Are my relationships flourishing?
8. Is there anyone in my life who needs to hear the good news of the gospel of Jesus?
9. Have I been faithful to the mission God has entrusted to me as a disciple of Jesus?
10. Am I being faithful to do all He has called me to do?

For those who know Jesus, the Day of the Lord will be a welcome one. Can you imagine it? I can't wait! What joy it will be! You and I will be dancing on the streets of the New heavens and the New earth one day. There won't be need of any light because God Light will shine so bright! Brighter than the noonday sun! Glorious!
After 51 years of knowing the deep, unfathomable love of Jesus, I can tell you with confidence that He is all He says He is. Jesus is God. He loves you. His death on a cross 2000 years ago, removed the barrier between God and us that our sins had erected. He offers this free gift of life to you today.
Jesus is the door to a life that is rich and full here on earth and the One who leads us into life in eternity.
